Race Culture & Education Decolonising Artist

Decolonise Artist in Curriculum

Module: Race Culture and Education Issues of race, ethnicity and culture continue to feature prominently in debates about and research into education and education policy. Yet questions about how to live and learn in multi-ethnic societies remain unanswered. This module explores these and related educational issues in more depth. We will engage in contemporary theoretical ideas about race and ethnicity, review empirical research on race/ethnicity and schooling, and examine how notions of race and ethnicity are understood in different historical and sociopolitical contexts. This 5000 words essay will look at recent efforts to decolonise art curriculum in secondary schools and use contemporary academic references to develop a linked primary art curriculum that promotes “visual literacy by reflecting on the act of ‘seeing’ and of ‘being seen’, and support students to recognise their own agency to make meaning through image making” (Autograph Gallery web Site 2024) This essay was greatly supported by participation in Autograph recent research https://autograph.org.uk/projects-research/seeing-differently-learning-together
